Initially, \u003cem\u003eSublunar Oracles\u003c\/em\u003e failed to make much impact and was championed only by a small group chill-out DJs; these days, it’s rightly considered a lost classic and one of the most overlooked albums of the ambient house era.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eIt’s certainly an inspired set with a story to tell. It was the product of the blossoming studio relationship between brothers Stefan and Dimitri Van Elsen. The former, the elder of the two, had been making a living as a club DJ on the Belgian scene since the early 1980s, taking up electronic music production following years spent playing experimental and industrial fare on local pirate station Radio Centraal. Dimitri, meanwhile, spent his days studying jazz piano and his evenings working on tracks.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe chance to release a collection of their bedroom productions came via a friend who worked for Buzz. The Van Elsen brothers grasped the opportunity, sequencing and tweaking a set of evocative, otherworldly tracks that had initially been written and produced over the best part of four years.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eDespite Stefan’s status as a working club DJ, \u003cem\u003eSublunar Oracles\u003c\/em\u003e largely looked towards the vibrant chill-out and ambient house scenes for inspiration, combining their own manipulated synthesizer sounds, dreamy jazz chord progressions and gentle beats with a smorgasbord of spoken word samples and home-made field recordings.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003eThe Antwerp-based brothers designed the set as a concept album of sorts, with a clear narrative thread running through the album’s eight intoxicating and ethereal tracks. The summary of our findings is as follows:\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e• Using electro-acoustic analysis, groove deconstruction, psycho-lunar testing and carbon-nuclear sub-division, we were able to accurately date the two musical compositions contained within the canister of audiotape. We cannot 100% confirm our suspicion that they were created by the same siblings behind “Sublunar Point”, but the balance of probability suggests that they were.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e• The first work has been given the title \u003cstrong\u003e“Amma (Moon Mix)”\u003c\/strong\u003e in tribute to its unique properties. We initially found no response to any of our tests, including patented methods such as tape biopsy and note sequencing. However, when a full moon was hanging in the sky, the musical work was audible both inside and outside the lab.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e• We attempted to match the “Oracle Genome” sequence extracted from the work using our extensive database of audio artefacts that have been made available to the public via the Safe Trip Laboratory’s openness programme. We discovered that this particular work was identical to one that emerged from Belgium in 1993.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e• To ascertain the optimal frequency of the second artefact discovered on the unearthed tape, our researchers handed copies to 23 members of the public and asked them to listen to the works at wildly different speeds. After reviewing the data, we were surprised to discover that the optimal frequency was 23,000 Hz. Curiously, this a frequency that only dogs can hear.\u003cbr\u003e\u003cbr\u003e• Fearing our research methods were not getting results, a second team of human “guinea pigs” was assembled in a dark room, played the work on a loop for 17.4 hours and then asked to say the first word that came to mind.
